The Main Floristry Courses & Qualifications Available in the UK

(Note that this is a guide to the range of industry recognised courses available. Other courses may be available).

Courses Offered by NPTC / City & Guilds

Level 1  

City & Guilds / NPTC    Certificate in Landbased studies – Floristry Option (CF)    FT/PT    An ideal course for school leavers or those seeking basic practical skills. A good option for those with little or no formal qualifications.
On completion you could progress to level 2.

Level 2

City & Guilds/ NPTC    National Certificate in Floristry (NCF)    FT/PT    An excellent all-round course for school leavers &/or mature students with an emphasis on the practical floristry skills needed by a trainee florist undertaking day to day tasks.
On completion you could progress to level 3.

Level 2 

City & Guilds/ NPTC    NVQ 2 Floristry     Work based    Work based apprenticeship training. Intended for those who are already employed in the industry. Emphasis on the practical floristry skills needed by a trainee florist undertaking day to day tasks. The course normally takes 1-2 years to complete.
On completion you could progress to level 3.

Level 3   

City & Guilds/ NPTC    Advanced National Certificate in Floristry (ANCF)    FT/PT    A well balanced course for more experienced florists needing to develop a wider range of intermediate floristry skills and knowledge. The course normally takes 1-2 years to complete.
On completion you could progress to level 4.

Level 3 

City & Guilds/ NPTC    NVQ 3 Floristry    Work based    Work based apprenticeship training. Intended for those who are already employed in the industry at supervisory level.
A well balanced training programme for more experienced florists needing to develop a wide range of intermediate floristry skills and knowledge. The course normally takes 1-2 years to complete.
On completion you could progress to level 4.

Level 4  

City & Guilds/ NPTC    Higher Diploma in Floristry (HDF)    PT    New Award: Launched September 2006
Replaces the Intermediate Certificate Society of Floristry (ICSF)
Will offer experienced/ part qualified florists the opportunity to further develop their advanced skills, underpinning knowledge and commercial competence. Candidates will need to be working in the floristry industry. On completion students could progress to Level 5 MDPF.

Level 5 

City & Guilds/ NPTC    Master Diploma in Professional Floristry (MDPF)    PT    New Award: Launched September 2006 Replaces the National Diploma Society of Floristry (NDSF)
This new professional award will enable advanced florists the opportunity to master a wide range of advanced floristry skills and the underpinning knowledge required to run a commercial floristry enterprise. Candidates will need to be working in the floristry industry. On completion students will achieve ‘Professional Florist’ status.
